Hi! I’m Demetra, and if you don’t know already…
I grew up in the garden with my mom and have always had a deep connection to nature, the elements, the plants, and my own spiritual nature.
I spent my childhood in the garden with my mom and running through fields with my friends.
In early adulthood, I moved to the city and I always felt out of place and longed for the embrace of nature.
Over time I felt so downtrodden by city life and the superficial aims of society. I found myself escaping to nature as often as I could.
Eventually, I found seasonal work in the Canadian Arctic (in the polar bear capital of the world) and would spend a few months of the year working up north and the rest of the year traveling in Central America and Southeast Asia.
On my journeys, I met many beautiful teachers and elders who taught me about plants, the sacredness of the land, and how to connect with the natural world.
I began tuning into the messages of the ancient northern bedrock, the Arctic sea, and the energies of the jungles.
There is one moment that was pivotal on my journey: while working up North, I met an Indigenous Elder who in passing told me that in his culture…
“every tree, plant, and creature has a spirit, a life force.”
All of nature is ALIVE!
This sent a shockwave through me as it ignited an ancient KNOWING within myself, a remembering, and a homecoming — after being raised by a religion that taught me that nature was inanimate, unconscious, and humans were the only thing that mattered.
Within seconds of hearing his words, it felt like I had retrieved a missing piece of my soul — a missing key.
It’s been 9 years since I founded the Sweet Spirit Apothecary and a handful of years since I began mentoring my plant curious students inside of Codes of Creation.
